The Visionary Behind Kayali

Mona Kattan

Mona Kattan is the co-founder of Huda Beauty and the founder and CEO of Kayali Fragrances. Born in the United States to Lebanese parents, Mona grew up between cultures — absorbing Western beauty influences while remaining deeply connected to the fragrance traditions of the Middle East.

"Fragrance is the most intimate luxury. It lives on your skin, in your memory, in the rooms you enter and leave." — Mona Kattan

To understand Kayali is to understand Mona Kattan — her roots, her obsessions, and the specific gap in the market she set out to fill. This is the story of how a private passion became a global fragrance phenomenon.

Growing Up with Fragrance

Mona Kattan grew up in a household where fragrance was not optional — it was cultural bedrock. Her family's Lebanese heritage meant that oud, rose, and amber were woven into daily life: burning bakhoor to welcome guests, applying attar before prayers, receiving bottles of French perfume as precious gifts. Fragrance was the language of hospitality, celebration, and identity.

The Gap in the Market

When Mona began working with her sister Huda on Huda Beauty, she brought this fragrance obsession with her. What she noticed was a gap: the world of luxury perfumery was dominated by European maisons that often felt inaccessible, while Middle Eastern fragrance traditions — deeply layered, richly complex, highly personal — were largely absent from global retail. She wanted to create a bridge.

Launching Kayali in 2018

Kayali launched in 2018 with a small initial collection and a specific thesis: fragrances designed to be layered. The name means "my imagination" in Arabic — a deliberate invitation to the customer to co-create their signature scent rather than simply buying what they were told to wear.

The Layering Philosophy

This is Kayali's most distinctive innovation. Rather than presenting each fragrance as a standalone masterpiece to be worn alone (as most European houses do), Kayali actively encourages combining multiple scents. The numbering system on each bottle is a guide — fragrances with similar numbers are designed to work together. The result is a fragrance wardrobe, not just a bottle.

Global Success

Kayali has grown from a regional curiosity into a genuinely global brand available in over 30 countries. The brand's success on social media — particularly Instagram and TikTok — reflects a community of devoted fragrance lovers who have adopted Kayali's layering philosophy as a creative practice. Vanilla 28 became a cult favourite; Musk 12 a everyday staple; Déjà Vu White Flowers 57 a social media sensation.
